ETIAS is the abbreviation of European Travel Information and Authorization System; it is an electronic authorization that allows visa-free nationals to board a carrier on their way to the Schengen Zone. The ETIAS authorization is similar to the ESTA for the USA & the ETA for Canada.
This Electronic Authorization is a procedure to determine the eligibility of visitors traveling to the European Union on a trip that poses no risk to the security of Schengen countries.
ETIAS is not a visa; it is part of a European intergovernmental initiative created to strengthen the security of the Member States of Schengen Area.
It is recommended that you apply for ETIAS at least 72 hours before your trip, but you will usually receive an answer to your request within the next few minutes.
The ETIAS application is a completely electronic system which allows and keeps track of visitors from countries who do not need a visa to enter the Schengen Zone. This procedure has started in 2016 but the system is expected to be in place by 2021.
